First Christian Church’s beautiful, historic structure had gone through years without a sanctuary update. Some of the interior details were unnoticeable and the overall atmosphere was rigid. Cavin Design Group completed a renovation that was sensitive to the client’s needs, budget friendly, and enhanced its 1920’s gothic revival architecture. The new renovation complemented the existing sanctuary which featured rich deep red carpet, augmented by a dark roof beam structure. The interior space also includes original colored glass windows and antique lighting fixtures above the congregational seating. To further develop the existing concept of the church, CDG redesigned the stage layout. New fabric in a warm red color was applied as a main, dramatic backdrop. This allowed for the cross and the brushed silver organ pipes to be visually emphasized. As an accent a raised plaster arch was painted a similar color to the wooden roof structure. This visible element framed the stage and provided a cohesive view. For a finished touch, new concealed lighting above the pulpit enabled the choir to read music better and highlighted the entire backdrop. The stage became a focal point for the congregation and gave focus to the choir and pastor. With the new transformation, the sanctuary is opulent in color and in style, which supports its historic character.
