CANADIAN VALLEY TECHNOLOGY CENTER - "THE COMMONS" AND ADDITIONAL PROJECTS
Cavin
Design Group provided architectural services to Canadian Valley Technology Center
for five new additions and one interior renovation, within an eight year span.
One of those additions involved “The Commons” area. CDG had the
challenge of designing an addition in a restrictive site and providing students
and faculty an appealing atmosphere.
The site for “The Commons” area involved a space in between two
walls of the existing building and two parking lots. CDG was able to design
an addition that fit within the controlled site plan. The new building seamlessly
connected with the existing building and allowed existing classroom exits to
be maintained. In the interior space of “The Commons”, CDG incorporated
a forty-five degree angle design theme. This concept was applied in the tri-colored
terrazzo flooring which affected the spatial layout and direction of pathways.
The floor plan offered students the convenience of a bookstore, printing service
office, and additional classrooms. With the new commons addition, the cafeteria
kitchen was renovated and featured a frameless glass enclosure to distinguish
areas of separation. This allowed the food service area and kitchen to be more
visible and give the illusion of a larger cafeteria space. To provide students
and staff optional dining areas, CDG designed a courtyard adjacent to the cafeteria
that served as a food court and lounge area.
