CHICKASHA JUNIOR HIGH ADDITION
Chickasha Junior High is a unique, original Art Deco building that required
an addition to accommodate an expanding student body. The addition needed to
be conveniently located and structurally connected to the existing school. Cavin
Design Group had the challenge of designing the addition to aesthetically correspond
to the 1936 style of the existing school by replicating historic details and
materials.
CDG evaluated the site and developed a new structure which completed a “U”
shape floor plan that appeared seamless and original. The new addition assisted
in enclosing the centrally located courtyard, providing a more private and secure
area for students and faculty. CDG also incorporated a resourceful design feature
that included a covered breezeway spanning over the city sewer main line, a
necessary city guideline to avoid sewer disruption. The breezeway offered a
protective area for students to avoid various weather conditions while accessing
between the new addition and existing building.
For physical appeal, CDG matched the brick material and color of the existing
building. The brick was laid to copy and continue the pattern of the existing
brick. The building was accented with metal faced canopies that referenced the
style of the 1930’s and created a distinct visual location of the multiple
entrances, in addition to providing shade. In the interior space, the floor
plan offered room for various classrooms, a safety equipped science laboratory,
a new cafeteria, and a commercial kitchen. All the material selections, finishes,
and equipment were chosen to maintain a cohesive color scheme throughout the
existing and new building.
