CHICKASHA CITY HALL– CHICKASHA, OK
There are less than ten Italianate
designed buildings in Oklahoma and Chickasha City Hall is a rare example. This
historic building was a former 1913 Federal Courthouse that needed a significant
renovation. The project concentrated on preserving, repairing, and replacing
intricate details and unique finishes.
One of the design challenges Cavin Design Group tackled involved the lobby’s patterned flooring, which had damage through four types of colored marble. A section of the floor had been missing due to ductwork that was installed in the 1960’s. CDG flawlessly matched new pieces of marble with the existing flooring for a complete and renewed look. The lobby walls had also featured green marble wainscoting that had been lost after a renovation during the sixties. To overcome budget restrictions, CDG creatively reconstructed the wainscot with wood and applied a faux finish. Throughout the building, ornamental plaster was repaired while walls were repainted to coordinate with the existing design scheme. New carpet was laid to reduce noise and to introduce texture into the offices and city council chambers. To highlight the renovations, new light fixtures were custom designed and are featured throughout the building.
CDG
was able to transform the dated courthouse into a new functional use as Chickasha
City Hall. This facility provided staff and visitors with custom renovations
that were compatible with the building’s historic character. The interior
spaces provided a beautiful environment and established a respect for preserving
one-of-a-kind architecture and design.
